It was a perfectly normal Tuesday when the message arrived. A customer wrote to me that her mother-in-law had cried upon receiving the stone picture – tears of joy. She had given the picture for their Golden Wedding anniversary, with both their names and the date from fifty years ago. "She said she's hanging it next to her wedding photo," the customer wrote. I sat at my desk in Munich, read the message twice – and remembered exactly why I do this.
Since 2015, here in my small workshop, stone pictures are created from real pebbles. No assembly line, no factory. Each picture is made individually – for a specific person, for a specific moment. And in this article, I want to show you how it works, for whom it's the right gift, and why a pebble picture is the one picture that truly stays on the wall.
What exactly is a stone picture?
When was the last time you received a gift that you truly kept? Not put in a drawer, not regifted after three weeks – but hung up because it was too beautiful to hide?
That's exactly what a stone picture is. It's a work of art made from real natural pebbles – river stones selected by shape and size, which together form figures, scenes, or motifs. A round, smooth stone becomes a head. A wider, flatter one becomes a body. No two stones are alike – and that's the point. Because no two people are alike.
With me, there's something else that makes a stone picture a truly personal piece: individually printed text – a name, a date, a sentence that says it all. And individual details that I draw by hand. Little flowers, hearts, small gestures that show: A hand was at work here. A real one.
How a pebble picture is created – a look behind the scenes

I'm often asked how it even works. How a pile of stones becomes a picture that makes someone cry – with joy.
It starts with me picking up the stones. Really. I sort them by size, feel their shape, consider: Which stone has something childlike about it? Which one looks strong, adult, protective? Nature has already made the shapes – I just bring them together.
Then comes the motif. You tell me who to depict – a family with three children and a dog, a bridal couple, an educator with her group, a person who is no longer here but should not be forgotten. I assemble the picture, consciously select each stone, and permanently fix it to the background.
The printed text – names, date, dedication – is professionally printed and integrated into the picture. Then come the hand-drawn details. And finally, the frame, in the size and color you desire.
What is then created has existed only once. And will only exist once.
For whom is a stone picture the right gift?

I'll be honest: A stone picture isn't right for every occasion. If you need something quickly, without thinking, you've come to the wrong place. But if you truly want to say something to someone – I thought of you, I invested time, you are important to me – then there's hardly anything better.
For a wedding, it's one of the most personal gifts imaginable. The bridal couple, their names, the date – and perhaps a sentence that tells their story in one breath. I've made pictures that hang next to wedding photos today. Some for ten years.
For a baptism or birth, a child receives a picture that grows up with them. With their name, their baptismal date, a saying given to them for their journey. Not a toy that eventually breaks – something that lasts.
For a farewell – whether a colleague, educator, or teacher – a pebble picture is a gift that truly hits home. Not just another bouquet that wilts in three days. But something that reminds the person of the time that was. Of the people they accompanied.
In times of grief, a joyous occasion isn't always needed. Some pictures are created for people who have passed away – as a silent reminder, as comfort, as a sign: You will not be forgotten. Making these pictures is the most profound work I do.
For First Communion, Confirmation, or a birthday, a stone picture is a gift that stands out. Not because it's expensive – but because it shows that someone put thought into it.
Why handmade and not a print from the internet?
That's a question I understand. There are cheaper options. Faster ones. Clickable ones.
But here's what I know after over ten thousand pictures sold: Mass-produced goods are put away. Handmade goods are hung up.
A printed picture from an online giant is ordered in five minutes and forgotten in five seconds. A pebble picture that someone truly made for this person – with real stones, real names, a real sentence – that's something else. That opens something up. That lasts.
In addition, my materials are natural. Real stones, wooden frames, natural materials – no inflated frills, no disposable item. Something you can give with a clear conscience – because it not only looks beautiful but is also made that way.
Frequent questions I get
How long does it take for my stone picture to be ready? Each picture is handmade – that takes time. Please allow sufficient lead time, especially before holidays and Christmas. If you want to be sure, order early.
Can I really customize everything myself? Names, number of people, text, dedication – yes. You tell me who and what to depict, I will implement it.
Will the picture be securely packaged? Yes. All stone pictures are carefully packaged and can also be sent directly as a gift.
What sizes are available? The standard size is 13 × 18 cm, larger formats are also available. You choose the frame size and frame color directly in the shop as a variant.
